The career of Gaius Marius shows many patterns that would eventually lead to the fall of the Roman Republic. He was, in many ways, a new man from the Italian countryside who came to be a man of much prestige in Rome through his renowned military ability. For a man who the government had a tough time politically recognizing, he was given unprecedented military power in Rome. The military need could only be solved through bending the already accepted constitution. In the long run his major reform was to change relationship of troops to the government entirely.
