GA SUPER READERS About Super Readers - FAQS
What is the GA Super Readers Club? Super Readers Club members read at least eight (8) extra books beyond their required school reading. During the year, 5th grade Super Readers meet approximately once each month to discuss the novels they are reading. It is also a chance to clarify Super Reader requirements. Readers are awarded prizes and share treats such as ice cream sundaes. At the Lower School Final Assembly, Fifth Grade Super Readers are recognized publicly. Students who have completed all requirements receive a Super Reader lapel pin and a book store gift certificate. Can the database offer suggestions for good books? There are over one thousand book entries posted. We urge everyone to browse the Super Readers Web Site. Keep in mind that the book reactions are in the students own words. They are honest appraisals written primarily for their classmates. The students hope these suggestions will help many children to make great reading choices. Reviews are organized alphabetically by title. They are also listed by author, so if you like a book by a particular writer, check to see if any other books are featured. What are the requirements?
What is the format for the reviews? Each entry follows this format: How do I submit a reaction? What makes a good book review? How may book reactions should I have completed? We recommend that you submit about 1 per month if you plan to complete all 8 by the end of the year. The schedule is your choice, however. Some students read and submit in batches. We would prefer that you not leave everything to the last minute. You need time to process and so do we. Do I have to stick to 8 books? Many students submit less than 8 but still like participating in Super Readers. Your work will be posted whether you submit 1 or 8 or 100 (just kidding!). We would love for everyone to be involved. You may submit as many reviews as you want but please remember that the emphasis is on enjoying and sharing books rather than quantity or competition. Do you have to be in 5th grade to use this database? Books from many grades are included in the listings. The majority are on a 4th, 5th and 6th grade reading level. Some Super Readers are reading on a middle school level and have posted reviews that an 8th grader might find interesting. Other readers have chosen to include reviews of classic children's books that they treasure. Check to see if some of your favorites are here! The title directories list the suggested reading level for each book. What is the service component? Super readers have the option of contributing at least one children's book to the database, This is a service to the GA community because parents of younger children can check titles to find recommendations for age-appropriate stories. They can benefit from your reading experience and your willingness to share your impressions. What books have touched you? What makes them special? Why do you think other children will find them appealing? Third and fourth grades consult the Super Readers database for recreational reading suggestions. We now have a huge number of offerings to choose from and this has been very beneficial to the Summer Reading program. Likewise, kids from all over the world are able to see your opinions and share your love of books. Can anyone contribute to the Super Reader database? You have to be a Germantown Academy 5th grade student to enter a review on the Super Reader Web Site. Although we really appreciate other students willingness to share their work, we do not have the staff to keep up with the volume of material.
