On Colonial Day, guests enter the schoolroom and are greeted by all of the children who have assumed various roles. They will speak to guests, as their character, about life in several kinds of colonial schools. Guests will view quill pens, a colonial school bell, a “switch” with which children were punished if they did not obey their teacher. Also on view will be a dunce cap, whispering sticks, and several embarrassing signs. Colonial teachers believed in the saying, “Spare the rod and spoil the child.”
