-Pompey was a great general.

-Pompey was a bad politician.

-In 59 BC Pompey returned to Rome to find that tensions with himself and Crassus had grown.

-Both Crassus and Pompey had large armies.

-Cicero, the leader of the senate, allied himself with Pompey.

-Cicero used flattery to become allies with Pompey.

-57 BC both men were in Italy with their armies ready to fight.

-Julius Caesar stepped in as negotiator.

-The men worked out an agreement, they formed the First Triumvirate.

-Two of the three men returned to Rome and forced the Senate to obey

-Pompey married (most likely for political reasons) Julia, Caesar's daughter.

-Within the next five years Julia died .

-Then Crassus died in a war in Syria.

-Crassus led his army into the Syrian dessert after the Parthian army.

-Crassus was a bad general.

-After a few days Crassus army was out of water and suffering.

-Parthian army attacked, killing off two full Roman legions.

-Crassus was among the deceased.

-Caesar had campaigned, winning allies in Gaul, and the people's support.

-Pompey had stayed in Rome while his influence diminished.

-Caesar and his troops crossed the Rubicon to Rome on Jan. 11, 49 BC.
