Introduction
Cleopatra was born in 69 BC in Alexandria, a town
on the coast of Egypt. She had two older sisters, Cleopatra VI and Berenice
IV, and a younger sister, Arsinoe IV. She had two younger brothers, Ptolemy
XIII and Ptolemy XIV. Some believe that Cleopatra VI died as a child and
Ptolemy Auletes, Cleopatra's father, had Berenice beheaded. In 51 BC, after
her father's death, the Roman leader, Pompey, was left to care for the children.
In his will, Ptolemy Auletes left Egypt to Cleopatra VII and Ptolemy XIII.
The Roman empire was on the rise, while the Ptolemys' power was decreasing.
Egypt decided to ally with the Romans.
