Discussion Guidelines for Group Leaders

Book discussions are an opportunity for students and their adult group leaders to share their love of books.  This method of sharing models for students the way adults, who are lifelong readers, talk about literature.

  • Introduce yourself and explain why you volunteered to be a group leader and why you love books...

  • Set guidelines for sharing:

    1. Each person should have approximately the same amount of time to share.  Make sure that students understand the time limits.
    2. Do not allow one person to dominate the conversation.
    3. Encourage students to ask questions about the book and start a conversation, perhaps comparing and contrasting their selections.

  • Questions to generate discussion:

    1. Why would you recommend this book to others?
    2. Why did the author write this book?
    3. Have you read (or would you recommend) any other books in this genre?
    4. What is particularly interesting (exciting, funny, mysterious, unique, well written...) in your book?
    5. Who are your favorite authors?
    6. Tell us a little more about the main character(s).
    7. How would you change a book?
    8.  Is a sequel a possibility?  Would you read more in the series?
    9.  What did (student's name) say about his/her book that would make you want to read it?

Remember:
The more children read, the better they will read;
the better they read, the more they will want to read.
It's a wonderful cycle!
