Why Fish
live in Water

"Gather round gather round
everyone," Grandfather told the children. "Eat your
popped corn, I shall pass around maple syrup to dip it in. Would
you like to hear a story?"
"Yes!" cried the children.
"Okay. Long ago when the earth was new and being created
the Creator needed help so he appointed many different spirits
to be in charge in many different things, but he was in charge
of people. He created First Man and then First Woman so neither
would be lonely. One he the spirits he created was rain spirit.
He was in charge of all water including rain, rivers, lakes, ponds,
and oceans.
Only a week after First Man and First Woman were created rain
spirit finished creating every body of water. He was very bored
so he decided to make it rain and rain and rain.
First Woman and First Man decided they couldn't stay out and get
soaked so they built barrel roof house like the one we live in.
But rain spirit did not like this. He'd been trying hard to make
it rain and First Man and First Woman didn't even appreciate it.
With his new power rain spirit decided to make it rain and rain
and rain. It rained one month straight.
First Man got fed up with this and up the mountain to where the
creator lived. He knocked on the door and up came the creator.
"Creator please ask rain spirit to stop making it rain. Its
been raining one month straight!" First Man said.
"I'll try. Wait here for my results." Creator told First
Man.
Creator walked over to the snowy mountain peak where rain spirit
lived.
"Rain spirit please stop making it rain. If you don't stop
by the time First Man is you shall be punished." And with
that he walked away.
When creator got home First Man asked
"How was it?"
"It went well, it should stop raining by the time you get
home."
"Thank you," First Man said gratefully.
But by the time he got home it was still raining and his clothes
were soaked.
When Creator looked over the mountain and saw it was still raining
he marched over to where rain spirit and said
"You disobeyed me, you shall be punished. Since you created
all of the bodies of water you shall live in them."
And from that day on rain spirit was a fish and could only live
in water.
