Pocahontas

by Jessica

My stamp is a picture of Pocahontas, daughter of the Indian Chief Powhatan, in 1606 when she was 11-years-old. It was at that time, at age 11, when she saved the life of Captain John Smith, leader of the settlers at Jamestown. When Powhatan was about to kill Smith, Pocahontas begged her father to spare him. I have drawn Pocahontas in the woods of Virginia where she grew up near the James River.

In 1613, Pocahontas met John Rolfe, who she later married in 1614. Pocahontas had a baby named Thomas, and when he was old enough, John Rolfe took his family to England. In 1617, while waiting for a ship back to America, Pocahontas died of small pox.
