Materials Used

-wood has not survived

nether has the bronze

-paintings and written accounts

show these materials being used

-stone and marble survived

Style Influence

-influence by the cultures they

conquered

-Greek myths

-sphinx and the lion (borrowed from Egypt)

Beds

-wood frame

-with ivory ,tortoiseshell, bronze, or even silver inlaid

-supported by rope webbing or bronze trellis (a frame or structure of lattice-work)

-mattress stuffed usually with sheep's wool or the feathers of swans and geese

 

 

Couches

-flat base with an inclined head rest at one end (mattress and pillow not included)

-used by Roman nobility for dining

-diners would recline to their left side and eat with their right hand

Chairs

-most poor had plane wooden stools

-rich could afford a Solium

-Solium were fashioned thrones with curve backs for comfort

-Solium were massive often custom built inside the home

Stools

-were made of bronze

-were used in ceremonies

-folding stools were called Sella Curulis

-Sella Curulis were used by judges in ancient Rome

Tables

-Often round or rectangular

-huge in size

-often held prized goods for showing off to guest

-made of bronze ,wood , silver , or solid marble

-couches would surround the table for meal time
