In second grade the children have physical education class four times a week. Each class is divided into four different sections: the warm-up, the activity, the processing, and the cool-down.
During the
warm-up, the students do different locomotor movements such as walking, jogging,
running, sprinting, galloping, and hopping. They are also asked to demonstrate
strengthening exercises such as seal walks and crunches. After the students
do these locomotor movements and strengthening, they are asked to stretch.
The next section is the activity. Our units change every three-weeks. The activities that we focus on are: ball skills, cooperative games, dance, jumping, obstacle course, parachute, scooters, swimming, and tumbling. Specific goals and objectives are taught for each activity.
The third section is processing. At this time we discuss the different body
parts used for the
activity
and the skills involved. We feel it is important for the children to understand
all the aspects of an activity.
The last section is the cool-down. During this time, the students do relaxing
acti
vities to
calm their bodies and reduce their energy levels before going back to the classroom.
The cool-downs that we work on involve self-control, listening, and cooperation.
The goals for second grade are: improvement of gross and fine motor skills; recognition of physical limits while working to full potential; and the development of social skills such as peer support, cooperation, and respect for one another.
It is our wish that the students at Germantown Academy have a positive physical education experience. Parents are invited to stop in and visit us anytime that is convenient for them. Sneakers should be worn if parents want to play!
