Totem poles are tall pieces of wood
with pictures, usually of animals, carved in them. The pictures
told family stories and legends. The native people of the northwest
coast of North America have been carving totem poles for many
years. Some totem poles are so large, they have doorways cut into
the bottom that people can walk through!
