At one time, Native Americans had no written alphabet, yet they kept a record of the seasons and special events. Picture writing, or pictography, was used by the Native Americans as a way of recording important events or telling stories. Each pictograph was a drawing that represented an action, or a person, place, or thing. Pictographs were painted on a tanned animal hide.
