Project Summary

Second and third grade students will celebrate the beauty of autumn by writing and sharing original poems about the season. Each participating class will chose a poetry format upon which to model their poems. All classes submitting poetry will have their work posted on a class page on our web site. Each class is also invited to submit electronically ONE student illustration. The school name and address, the class URL and/or e-mail address, the illustration and all student poems will be posted to the class page. Classes are encouraged to read the poetry submitted by other schools and to send e-mail messages, sharing positive comments about the poetry.

Curriculum Area: Language Arts, Science, Technology

Age range: 6 to 9 years

Objective

1. To develop an appreciation of poetry.

2. To express the beauty and uniqueness of autumn through poetry.

3. Develop reading and writing skills.

4. Use the Internet to study an assigned poetry format.

5. Showcase student writing on the World Wide Web.

6. To encourage electronic correspondence between students and/or classes.

There will be a page posted for twenty-five participating second or third grade classes.

 

Process

1. Register for the project by 11/15/99

2. Select a poetry format 3. Study the poetry format through the web resources furnished. Browse the work of other students to familiarize your students with the format.

4. Have students write, word process and spell check their original poems.
5. Send one email message with the poems of each student in your class.
6. Attached to the same e-mail message a student illustration. (optional).
7. Browse the Autumn Poem page repository to view the work of other participants in the project.
