The story, Abe Lincoln’s Hat, describes Lincoln’s work as a lawyer before he became the sixteenth president of the United States.

In this book, we discover that, while Lincoln helped many settlers with their problems, he was not a good paper-keeper. What did he do? He would stuff his letters and notes into the leather band of his hat.

When he took off his hat, the papers would remind him of what he had to do- well, most of the time.

After reading this book, the students imagined themselves as settlers in Illinois in 1839. They composed a letter to Abe Lincoln asking for his help in solving their “problem.”
