A Legend

Why Butterflies Are All Different Colors
and Raindrops Are Clear

By Willa and Sammy

Long, long ago butterflies were as gray as an old elephant and the rain was as colorful as the rainbow. One day Butterfly was flying and she saw a big gray cloud in the sky. She thought, "Uh -oh, it's rain". So she flew under a nearby tree. Her mother had warned her that rain would make her wings all soggy and she wouldn't be able to fly. Butterfly thought for a second and wondered if her mother was right. Well, she was going to find out. So she flew out from under the tree and the rain fell on her but her wings didn't get soggy like a squashed banana and she could still fly! But she did feel a little heavier because her wings were absorbing the beautiful colors from the rain. Butterfly looked back at her wings and saw that they were colorful. Happiness filled her heart because she wasn't a dull gra y anymore. She was as beautiful as a rainbow.
Butterfly showed all her butterfly friends and they asked Butterfly how she made her wings so colorful. Butterfly said, "I flew under the raindrops and my wings absorbed the colors from the rain."
So the next time it rained, her butterfly friends flew under the raindrops and became colorful, too. Since so many butterflies went under the rain, the colors were all sucked out of the raindrops. The raindrops became clear.
And to this day butterflies remain colorful and raindrops are clear.
