A Legend
The Disappearing Rice
By Shimmers Like Star (Stephanie)
and (Jackie) Lightning
A long time ago there was an Ojibwa
village. They were starved. They had no more rice to eat! Every
year wile rice picking they would knok some rice into the lake. That
way more rice would grow next year. One year a boy named Rice Worker
was going to pick rice for the village. He remembered that last
year he did not let any rice fall in the lake...So that year no
rice stalks were in the lake.Rice Worker told the village what
he had done.So the chief made Rice Worker do all the work. One
day he was spearfishing. There was a great fog. Rice Worker paddled
his canoe onto a cloud. The cloud drifted up to the Rice Gods.
Rice Worker begged for rice. The Rice Gods thought about it. They
said that they would grant his wish, since he was sorry for his
mistake. He went back to the village. They rewarded him with a
new name. His new name was Boy Who Speaks With Gods. They had
a big feast.
