A Legend
Shimmering Star
by Sara (Gentle Rabbit )
and Emily (Eyes Like Sky )
One dark night in the dark woodlands
of the southeast, there was a girl named Singing Bird. Her sisters
were mean to her and called her Lazy Bird. She got very, very,
very mad. She noticed before she went to bed that there were no
stars in the sky. There should have been nine billion shimmering,
wishing and regular stars. The shaman told her to
go to the sky people and give them magic flowers
from the meadow to trade for nine billion stars. It took six moons
and seven suns through the Smoky Mountains to get to the home
of the sky people. She traded the magic flowers for nine billion
stars. She threw the stars in the sky. Her people had a potlatch
and gave her a new name, and that name was SHIMMERING STAR.
