Long, long ago when the world was
new, Eagle had no beak. After the birds had come back from the
south, Eagle started c
omplaining.
Woodpecker would invite him over, but Eagle would say, ''But I have no beak.'' So one day he decided to
go to his friend Squirrel, the Old One. Squirrel said, ''Go to
the river. When you get there, you will find Deer.He will tell
you what to do."
So he went to the river that was as cool as the wind. He saw deer
waiting there. "Deer, squirrel sent me here.Do you have
any advice for me?"
"Yes, I do. Go to the bottom of the river and bring up two
shells -each with one shining snow-white pearl.''
Eagle did this and asked what to do
next. "Give one of the pearls to me." Eagle did this.
Deer placed the pearl in the shining water on a beautiful crystal.
Deer said, "Give me the other pearl."
Deer placed it on a different crystal. He picked them up, pressed
them together and made one end pointy. It formed a beautiful
beak. Deer gave it to Eagle.
Eagle was so happy that he said to deer, "Thank you."
Then Eagle went to thank Squirrel who then thanked the Great
Spirits for giving him the wisdom to help Eagle.
And that is how Eagle got his beak.
